Our Philosophy

At Polka Dot Preschool, we are committed to providing high-quality early childhood care and education in a respectful and nurturing environment. Our philosophy emphasizes a child-centered, inquiry-driven approach that fosters academic, social-emotional, and humanistic growth.

We believe in an emergent, play-based curriculum inspired by Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and culturally responsive teaching. Our approach promotes self-regulation, autonomy, and peaceful socialization while actively embracing diversity through anti-racist education.

We value the power of relationships and community, working closely with families to create a supportive network that extends learning beyond the classroom. Every student is seen, valued, and supported, empowering them to thrive in all aspects of their development.

Connecting Philosophy to Our Daily Schedule

Our daily schedule at Polka Dot Preschool reflects our commitment to fostering an environment where children can explore, discover, and grow at their own pace. Here’s how our philosophy is integrated into each part of our day:

8:00 - 9:30: Arrival/Free Play/Snack

  • Philosophy Connection: We begin the day with free play, allowing children to choose activities that interest them. This period encourages independence and nurtures curiosity and social skills as they interact with peers. A healthy snack is provided to ensure they are ready for the day's adventures.

9:30 - 10:00: Circle Time or Story Time

  • Philosophy Connection: Circle Time or Story Time fosters community and belonging. Through group activities and stories, children develop their listening skills, empathy, and communication skills.

10:00 - 11:30: Free Learning Time/Small Group Emergent Learning/Outdoor Activities

  • Philosophy Connection: During this period, children engage in activities that draw on their interests and strengths. Small group learning allows for personalized attention, while outdoor activities promote physical health and a connection with nature, reinforcing our play-based and emergent curriculum.

11:30 - 12:30: Lunch/Free Play

  • Philosophy Connection: A hot, home-cooked lunch provides nourishment and a sense of comfort. Free play after lunch helps children develop social skills and independence as they choose their activities.

12:30 - 1:00: Free Play/Story Time

  • Philosophy Connection: Another opportunity for free play or a calming story session helps children transition smoothly into rest time, supporting their emotional and social well-being.

1:00 - 3:00: Rest Time

  • Philosophy Connection: Rest time is crucial for physical and emotional development. It allows children to recharge and process their morning activities, promoting overall well-being.

3:00 - 5:00: Snack/Free Play/Outdoor Play

  • Philosophy Connection: An afternoon snack and more free play, including outdoor activities, ensure children remain engaged and active. This time reinforces the importance of exploration and play in learning.

5:00: Closing Time

  • Philosophy Connection: As the day ends, we ensure a smooth transition for children and families, reflecting our commitment to respect and community.

Throughout the day, we incorporate music, language, yoga, art, cooking, and nature study, drawing inspiration from our surroundings. This holistic approach ensures that every student at Polka Dot Preschool receives a well-rounded, enriching, and joyful early education experience.

"Education is the practice of freedom, where learners are encouraged to explore, create, and grow."

-Paulo Freire (1998)
